Steeling the board

The board of Goldman Sachs elected Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and chief executive of ArcelorMittal, to be an independent director, effective June 28. Mittal will serve on the audit, compensation and corporate governance and nominating committees. He becomes the 10th non-executive director and 13th member of the board.

As rival banks face a need to overhaul their shamed boards, Goldman had the luxury of broadening its knowledge base. The Indian steel magnate brings valuable Asian experience. But Goldman shouldn’t stop there. The board could be slimmed down and do with more financial knowledge.
