Apple released a number of updates to its line-up of Mac notebooks, including a price-reduction on its lowest-end notebook, the Macbook, by $100 to $999.

Prior to the announcement, analysts and technology industry followers were expecting a price cut to around $800.

The maker of the iPhone and iPod is known for trendy offerings, not cheap ones. But by failing to deliver a bargain-priced notebook, Apple missed an opportunity to increase its share of the computer market. The cheap portables trend is real, fashion is fleeting.
