As many as 350,000 public sector jobs could be lost over the next five years, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

“The public sector has yet to feel the full impact of the recession, and the resultant bloodbath in the public finances,” according to economist John Philpott.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics have showed that overall UK unemployment is rising faster in this recession that at any time since the 1980s.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s have been in a more upbeat mood about the UK economy after posting decent quarterly sales. But shop-owners aren’t in the clear. The recession hasn’t hit the public sector yet. When it does, the pain could be severe.
