Markit Group, the pricing and index data provider, has received a request for information from the US Department of Justice, which is investigating possible abuses in the credit derivatives market, according to Bloomberg.

Several banks that are among Markit’s largest shareholders have also received requests for information. The DOJ is investigating whether the banks have unfair access to Markit’s data before the company disseminates it publicly.

The Justice Department is asking banks that own data provider Markit for information as it investigates possible CDS market abuse. Its legal options aren't clear-cut, but its ability to embarrass could threaten the lightly regulated environment favoured by derivatives dealers.
