Going underground

Context News

The Spanish government has said it will step up efforts to combat tax fraud. The Professional Association of Tax Inspectors in Spain has proposed a new plan to cut tax evasion, which it says could raise E100bn from 2010 to 2014, or ten times the E11bn it says the government would raise through increased taxes.

Corporate tax receipts fell 37% in the period from June to August this year, against the same period last year.

That doesn’t mean gloomier. Quite the contrary. Tax dodging, always big in Spain, seems to be booming in the recession. But it’s a dangerous habit that may make the government’s task of balancing the budget harder when growth returns.
