Quality drive

Context News

Toyota has halted sales and production of eight vehicles representing some 63 percent of its U.S. sales in 2009 while it investigates problems with sticking accelerator pads. It is also recalling 2.3 million units already sold.

The models affected are various versions of the Camry and Corolla sedans, the RAV4 and Highlander SUVs, the Tundra pick-up truck, the Matrix, the Avalon and the Sequoia. Toyota is also suspending production of these vehicles for the week of Feb. 1.

Toyota press release.

This column has been corrected to make clear that Toyota is the largest seller of vehicles globally, not in the United States as originally stated.

The glitch that forced the Japanese carmaker to halt sales of 63 pct of its U.S. fleet should benefit Motown rivals. But shared platforms exacerbated Toyota's pain. With the Big Three making greater use of the cost-saving measure, they may want to invest more in quality control.
