Barclays' costly Protium exit leaves sour taste

Toxic smells

The UK bank has reversed a deal that limited its exposure to market fluctuations on $12.3 bln of toxic assets. But to do so it has paid $83 mln to a group of exemployees for just 18 months' work. The exit revives questions about why Barclays ever agreed to the transaction.
