Goodwill is accounting at its most confused
A European regulator has complained that goodwill writeoffs are inadequate. Inconsistency is one issue. The main problem is that the rules make no sense. They rely on a melange of traditional cost-based record-keeping, doubtful financial theory and blind trust in markets.
