The Canadian aluminium group is seeking a rival suitor to Alcoa. Likely partners, such as BHP or Rio Tinto, have fewer synergies. But both are flush with cash and have strategic reasons to pounce. With disposals, Alcan s assets could be bought at near replacement cost.
