The integration of wildcatters and refiners is the industry’s sacred cow. But it also accords a conglomerate discount to Exxon, BP, Shell and other majors. Splitting up, as shrimpy Marathon is doing, could add hundreds of billions of dollars to shareholders’ portfolios.
