The appointment of the former Schroders boss as Citi interim CEO makes him arguably the most influential Brit in global finance, if only for a short while. Not that Bischoff, born in Germany, is that British. But neither are many of the other candidates.

Sir Win Bischoff, chairman of Citigroup Europe, has been appointed Citigroup's acting chief executive following the resignation of Charles Prince.

Sir Win joined Citigroup in 2000 with the US bank's takeover of Schroders' investment banking business. Sir Win joined Schroders in 1966, and was appointed chairman in 1995.

He is also a director of McGrawHill, the US publisher, Akbank, the Turkish bank, UK property company Land Securities, and UK insurer Prudential.

Sir Win, who was born in Aachen, Germany, moved with his parents to South Africa in 1955 and later graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He was knighted in 2000, and has dual GermanUK nationality.
