The Chinese energy major met with resistance when it tried to buy U.S. oil producer Unocal in 2005. By contrast, a $1.1 bln stake in Chesapeake is unlikely to make big political waves, yet still fits CNOOC’s global ambitions. Still, bigger deals look far off.
