Buyout groups strenuously deny parallels with the heavily indebted, sprawling giants of the 1960s such as ITT or LTV. But girth has advantages. Look at Apollo s $6.3bn Huntsman bid. Synergies with its other chemical holding enabled it to make a better offer.
