Timing trouble

General Electric’s finance arm posted a pretax profit in the first quarter, it’s flush with cash, and over time it has shed assets. But it is still sitting on moneylosing commercial real estate. If it sold now, GE Capital would take a loss. Luckily it can afford to wait.
