The tech company s decision to appoint exSAP boss Leo Apotheker as CEO raises questions. He was forced out at SAP, and may have a tough time firing up HP s troops. On the other hand, HP s decision to split the chairman and CEO roles is solid.

HewlettPackard has appointed Leo Apotheker as chief executive officer and president. The Board also elected Ray Lane, managing partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, as a new member of the Board and designated him as nonexecutive chairman. Both elections are effective Nov. 1.

Apotheker previously served at SAP for more than 20 years. He was appointed cochief executive in 2008. Apotheker was sole chief executive for less than a year before he left the company early in 2010. Under his tenure, SAP attempted to raise prices after 10 years of keeping them steady. However, customers complained the amount of services they need did not justify the planned markup, forcing SAP to back down.
