Chinese regulators have approved a Thai tycoon’s $7 bln purchase of HSBC’s stake in insurer Ping An. But the financing had to be rejigged. The Thais have rescued a juicy deal and the UK bank has avoided an embarrassing flop. The seemingly happy ending leaves much to be explained.
