Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov’s potential exit from Polyus, the Siberian gold miner, has revived talk of a tie-up with fellow Russian producer Polymetal. An enlarged national player might please the Kremlin, but the industrial logic of gold mergers is weak.
