Departing CEO Ross McEwan ditched the state-controlled lender’s 2020 return target, blaming pressure on margins. Increased lending makes up for some of the shortfall, but at the risk of more bad debts if the economy turns. A 1.5 bln pound special dividend is a short-term balm.
