The Spanish bank s 25% stake in Sovereign Bancorp was controversial two years ago. Now it has taken a $1.1bn writedown. And the terms of the deal limit its ability to snap up other US targets. Given the Sovereign botch, Santander s shareholders might see that as a silver lining.
