A group of wealthy entrepreneurs are suspected of plotting a takeover of the famous football club. There may be a bid one day but it probably won’t come from them.

John de Mol, founder of the Big Brother television programme, has increased his stake in Manchester United from 2.9% to 3.5%. Other investors recently buying shares in the club include Malcolm Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers football franchise, and Dermot Desmond, who controls Celtic football club. Irish racehorsing millionaires JP McManus and John Magnier became the biggest shareholders in March when they increased their stake to 10.4% of the shares. The shares have risen almost 35% since the start of the year.
