AstraZeneca is the latest drugmaker to say its Covid-19 vaccine is effective. It’s good news and offers hope of a return to normal. But tricky logistics, supply constraints and a reluctant public could stall a mass rollout. Investors eyeing a quick recovery may be disappointed.

AstraZeneca said on Nov. 23 its vaccine for the novel coronavirus could be around 90% effective without any serious side effects.

The vaccine developed by Oxford University was 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 when it was administered as half a dose followed by a full dose at least one month apart, according to data from the late-stage trials in Britain and Brazil.

Another dosing regimen showed 62% efficacy when given as two full doses at least one month apart. The combined analysis from both dosing regimens resulted in an average efficacy of 70%.

The interim analysis was based on 131 infections among participants who received the vaccine and those in a control group who were given an established meningitis shot.

Meanwhile, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was “more and more confident” that life will return to normal in the spring as country’s National Health Service plans to give a coronavirus vaccine to every adult who wants one by Easter, the Times reported on Nov. 21.

Only part of the European Union population can be inoculated against the new coronavirus before 2022, European Union officials said in an internal meeting, Reuters reported on Oct. 22.

AstraZeneca shares were down 1.8% at 81.79 pounds by 0819 GMT on Nov. 23.
